Systematic review of variables analysing motivation for physical activity and healthy habit
Main Article Content
Abstract
Given the need to include a diversity of instruments and methodologies to comprehensively capture motivational aspects and their effects on adolescent health and well-being, the analysis of this paper reveals a wide variety of approaches and methods used to investigate motivation towards physical activity and quality of life in adolescents. The aim is to identify variables to assess motivation for physical activity and healthy habits in adolescents. To achieve this, a systematic review is proposed, following the PRISMA 2020 Declaration, carried out in the WoS and SJR databases during the months of September to December 2022. Only articles in Spanish and English published within the 2015-2022 time frame were selected. The search terms were: "Physical Activity", "Motivation" and "Adolescents". In a sample of 32 articles, the sample size, methodological design, data collection instrument and number of schools were analysed. The last filter applied was in the areas of research, education and sports science. It is concluded that 16 variables were analysed to assess motivation in physical activity and healthy habits, of which 6 focus specifically on motivation. Among these, the motivational climate stands out in first place, followed by self-determined motivation and basic psychological needs (BPN). On the other hand, 10 variables associated with motivation were identified, the most analysed being physical activity as assessed by various instruments. In total, 90 data collection mechanisms were used to assess these 16 variables, including questionnaires, physical tests, nutritional status (body mass index - BMI), accelerometers, interviews and questions designed by the researchers. Each article analysed an average of 4 variables and used 5 instruments. The percentage of participants per study was close to 690 students, with a sample composed mainly of adolescents between 13 and 17 years old. The studies were conducted in an average of 10 schools.
