Abstract

This retrospective study aims to analyze the performance of athletes from Djibouti in major international competitions in order to understand and optimize their future sporting performances. The sample consisted of (n: 11) selected major competitions, including both male and female participation. Using a quantitative, descriptive, and longitudinal approach, data were obtained from sources such as the International Olympic Committee, World Athletics, the African Athletics Confederation, and the Arab Athletics Union, and then analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013. The analyzed period is divided into four time intervals: 1980-1990, 1991-2001, 2002-2012, and 2013-2023. The results reveal interesting trends in (n: 37) medals obtained in these 11 competitions: the periods of 1991-2001 and 2002-2012 show insignificant performance, while 1980-1990 stands out for success in distance disciplines. The period 2013-2023 is particularly noteworthy in the Pan-Arab Championship, with 70.8% of the medals in middle-distance and distance events. Ultimately, this study highlights the crucial importance of long-term planning, the promotion of multidisciplinarity, early talent detection, and gender equality in the development of athletics in Djibouti.
