Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the progression of Djiboutian athletes who participated in the Summer Olympic Games from 1984 to 2020, in order to offer ideas that can improve the country's future sporting performance in these games. The approach adopted consists of a retrospective quantitative study. The sample is made up of all Djiboutian athletes who represented their country in these Games (n = 42), with a male predominance (83.3%) compared to female athletes (16.7%). Specific analysis guides were developed to support this study, based on four relevant themes related to the evolution of Olympic athletes. Data was obtained primarily from International Olympic Committee sources. The results reveal several key elements: a continued participation of the country, mainly focused on athletics (70.4%), despite the absence of medals since 1988. In addition, a significant improvement was observed at the government level, especially thanks to the granting of excellence scholarships to athletes. However, additional actions are required to grant specific status to elite athletes.
